When we created the Academy of Television in Johannesburg ten years ago, we wrote Creativity into the curriculum. Delivering the class was another thing. All I knew about creativity theory then was Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way, one of the field’s great achievements, a book loved by so many people. A book that is also very difficult to get through, like the 12 steps of addiction recovery she modelled it on. It was great to guide students to the end in a group. As I got to know the book better, I saw its limits.

 

Each chapter is titled on one specific “quality” of life. The qualities are great, but the chapters meander. Cameron favors slow and gentle artistic activities, not the kind of aggressive high-impact interventions we need to bring into modern business. The book outlines a recovery process, not a creative process. The structure is not something you can repeat as a daily tool.

 

One year we couldn’t get her books and I took on designing my own version. I did a huge amount of research and over the past eight years I’ve developed what’s now called the Innovation Explosion.

George Land’s experiments show we are in crisis. Our world needs maximum Creativity and we ain’t got it.

 

This crisis demands action! Focus! Leadership!

 

As I played around with models, I realized that Maslow’s hierarchy of needs places Creativity at the very top of its pyramid, a form of Transcendence. I understood this was again a misplay of Creativity as mystic, magic. Obviously Creativity happens at every level of the pyramid.

 

This is not a game kids.

 

We need cutting-edge velocity.

 

More creative thinking books have come out in the last ten years than in the rest of recorded history. And a lot of them have contributed to this workshop.

 

I created THE INNOVATION EXPLOSION by mixing and matching methods until a structure that made sense took shape. I got inspired by the idea that became the basis of Session 6 (Connection) of the workshop: nothing is original.

 

So I took all these ideas and beat them around until they composed a simple 12 step process that you can use to rebuild your creativity from the ground up.

 

I noticed that people think Creativity is magic when it is actually just a logical activity.

 

And Innovation is just Creativity into Action.

Everyone makes progress in a project they thought was lost - and the average participant has more than doubled their off-mean creativity test score.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF HUMANKIND

For hundreds of years,

humans have had to fit into

rigid, geometric structures.

50 Years Ago...

 

A NASA psychologist

named George Land

decided to find out

when and how

we lose our

 

CREATIVITY

 

He started by testing school kids at age 5.

    98% scored at the level of

    CREATIVE GENIUS!


    Five years later he tested

    the same children again.

    At age 10

    only 30%

    still scored as

    creative geniuses.

     

    THESE WERE

    THE SAME KIDS!!

    Somehow

    2/3 of them

    had lost significant

    creative abilities!!


     

    It gets worse!

    He went back again at age 15.

    Ready for this?

     

    Only 12% still scored

    as creative geniuses!

     

     

    Next

    Land and his team

    surveyed 280,000 adults.

     

    280,000!!

     

    Of the adults, only

    2%

    were still creative geniuses.

     

    2% !!!

    PRINCIPLES UNDERLYING

    THE INNOVATION EXPLOSION

    1. EVERYONE IS BORN EQUALLY CREATIVE AND WE ALL LOSE OUR CREATIVITY AS WE GROW UP

     

    There is no scientific evidence of a Creativity gene that favours one child over another at birth, or helps you inherit the incredible innovativeness of your parents.

     

    Extensive studies have shown this again and again. It is nurture, not nature, that is responsible for how Creative you have become.

     

    So then how come people do have such different levels of Creative ability and agility today?

     

    Land's shocking study hints at the root of the problem. 

     

    Remember - 2/3 of the children in Land's study plummeted in Creativity in the ages between 5 and 10. And almost no adults retained their Creativity level from childhood. Ken Robinson and others argue that school is at fault.

     

    At CYC we have a different theory. We see school as a natural response to the needs of humans.

     

    Society has judged Creativity as unnecessary for most adults. Creativity in adulthood threatens survival: more important has been the ability to make quick and decisive determinations of threats and opportunities, which means relying on experience. 

     

    If a lion is coming at you in the bush, it’s hardly the time to come up with a fresh new way of approaching things. When in crisis, stick with what works! And most human beings have lived in constant crisis for a long time.

     

    Now that reality is changing fast. For the first time in hundreds or even thousands of years, Creativity is the best route to survival. Education systems are beginning to respond to this.

     

    So how do we change this habit now in adulthood?

     

     

    2. NOT BY “THINKING OUT OF THE BOX”

     

    Think about it. If a lizard didn’t have boxes in its brain, it would not know what it can eat or what would eat it. It wouldn’t survive more than a few hours.

     

    A mammal has far more sophisticated sets of boxes, but it still needs to categorise everything it experiences to know how to respond. Humans are very clever mammals aren’t we? Our set of boxes looks more like this:

     

    Is it good or bad for me? Right or wrong? Attractive or repulsive? We make decisions about how to respond in every situation based on our experience, manifested in our specific landscape of boxes. In fact, our boxscape is our personality. We go with what has worked – or even often what has not worked – because it is who we are.

     

    We defend our boxscape against all challenges. Who we associate with, our taste in movies, our politics - we make judgments, we think in boxes.

     

    Asking you to think out of the box is like asking you to drive to Mopti without a map. You might make it there, but not soon. You probably don’t even know where Mopti is. You might welcome the challenge. But you won't win the race against a team with a GPS. 

     

    This is the experience of “Thinking outside the Box.”

     

    Creativity is NOT thinking outside the box. Which is good, because we’re terrible at that.

     

    Creativity is thinking INTO the box – but adding new items you don’t usually put there, or making the box bigger, or even creating brand new boxes.

     

    For instance, my dog eats carrots. I haven’t seen many dogs that do, and she didn’t always eat them. But one day, perhaps because she was hungry, she picked up a carrot someone dropped off the floor, and decided she liked it. And boom – a new item was placed in the “good to eat” box.

     

    That’s Creativity.

     

     

     

    3. SINCE CREATIVITY IS A SKILL, NOT A TALENT, IT’S EASY TO RECOVER IT

     

    As a skill, Creativity is something we can recover, just like learning to walk again after an accident.

     

    Creativity begins to grow again with the willingness to change your set of boxes.

     

    This is why even people who already “happen to be very creative” benefit from a recovery process. Their Creativity itself is a rigid box.

     

    Most people think they’re willing to shift. They raise their hands when asked if they are ready to become more Creative. But they don’t raise their hands when asked if they’re ready to become more uncertain. And that’s the challenge. Creativity IS uncertainty. The willingness to try new things out means being willing to question your existing boxes – being willing to question who you are.

     

     

    CREATIVITY = CURIOSITY = UNCERTAINTY = DOUBT

     

    Are you willing to start thinking INTO the box?

     

    Are you willing to become Uncertain?

     

     

    4. CREATIVITY IS A DIALOGUE BETWEEN CONSCIOUS AND SUBCONSCIOUS

     

    REMEMBER -

    the above experience is weird

    because

    the CREATIVE PROCESS

    looks like this:

     

     

    We perceive – take in information through our senses or from our memories.

     

    Then we analyse and categorise it – yep, put it into boxes.

     

    Then we ideate – come up with new ideas. We compare those ideas, and select one.

     

    We then represent it by writing, speaking, or just thinking it. This usually happens again and again in a loop; for instance in writing an email, or reading this paragraph.

     

    Why does the top diagram seem more familiar? Because we don’t actually surrender to the process. We interpret our perceptions in line with our boxscape and we decide too quickly, based on our bias.

     

    This is why five year olds are at an advantage. They perceive the world with less bias and they hardly judge at all. Have you ever seen a first grader berate themselves over their lousy drawing? Of course not. But as grown-ups we soil both ends.

     

    Look back at the three circles. We perceive, interpret, decide, and express both consciously and subconsciously. Most adults have either put our subconscious in a dungeon where no one can find it, or beat it into a coma with criticism and negativity. Yet this is where most of the creative process happens.

     

    We need to learn to manage our subconscious rather than abuse, suppress or control it.

     

     

    5. WHAT’S NEEDED IS CREATIVE RECOVERY

     

    The IDEATION moment is unique in that it is entirely a subconscious process. Everything before and after requires collaboration, but Ideation only requires to be left alone for a moment.

     

    This is why the experience of getting a flash of insight always seems like it came from outside yourself.

     

    Great innovators have managed to preserve their childlike willingness to keep the circles simple, and surrender to the process, or they have managed to find a way to rebuild or regain this innocence.

     

    Either way, they have learned to manage their subconscious instead of damaging it.

     

    This is the key thing you must take on board to have your Creative Process work its natural magic again. Train your conscious and subconscious minds to do the jobs they were designed for. Allow your subconscious space to play. 

     

    We have traumatised ourselves.

     

    We need to recover.
